In this episode of Retail Right Now, Total Retail's Ashley Chiaradio and Kristina Stidham discuss Amazon.com's announcement that it’s launching a new business line selling the technology behind its cashier-less convenience stores to other retailers. The technology, which Amazon calls Just Walk Out, will detect what products shoppers take from or return to shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When done shopping, customers can walk out and their credit card will be charged for the items in their virtual cart.

The technology isn't the same as what is in Amazon Go stores, as shoppers don't have to download the Amazon Go app in Just Walk Out-enabled retail locations. By developing this second technology and selling it to other retailers, Amazon is going all-in on cashier-less stores. Airport retailer OTG reportedly will use Amazon’s cashier-less technology starting next week in one of its stores in the Newark Liberty International Airport, followed by stores in LaGuardia Airport next.
