In this episode of Retail Right Now, Total Retail's Joe Keenan and Kristina Stidham discuss next week's Singles Day, the online shopping holiday created by Chinese e-commerce retail giant Alibaba, which will takes place every year on Nov. 11. This massive global shopping event — it's twice as large as the five-day Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend combined — creates cross-border e-commerce opportunity for U.S. brands. Therefore, U.S. retailers should consider participating in Singles Day. To take advantage of Singles Day and cross-border e-commerce in general, retailers should develop a strategy around the local consumer, ensure that their e-commerce platform can enable cross-border shopping for both desktop and mobile, and test that strategy on international online marketplaces such as Tmall (which is owned by Alibaba). Alibaba's Singles Day offers the chance for a trial run for U.S. retailers before Black Friday and Cyber Monday. If your business has yet to look into cross-border e-commerce, perhaps now is the time.
