Target's Missoni madness continues with a brand new mess. Many customers that placed orders online at Target.com for Missoni for Target are now receiving an email from the discount retailer saying their shipments are delayed or worse — they will be cancelled altogether.
More than 20,000 Missoni for Target items have been posted for sale on eBay less than 24 hours since becoming available. Some of the most expensive items to turn up on the internet auction site were the Missoni bike, a tea set, and a comforter/sham set.
There's Black Friday, then there's Target Tuesday. In a scene that was reminiscent of the shopping frenzy that typically comes the day after Thanksgiving, Target's website crashed several times throughout the day yesterday. More than a hundred shoppers lined up at many of its stores early in the morning on Sept. 13 for a sale of limited offerings of its Missoni for Target collection of bikes, luggage, clothes and housewares.
This year retailers are commemorating the Sept. 11 anniversary through charity. Companies such as Target, Best Buy, Neiman Marcus and Groupon partnered with the 9/11 Day of Service project and other nonprofits like MyGoodDeed.org to sponsor city-wide service projects across the country on Sept. 11, including clean-up and restoration efforts.
Some priceless publicity to cement Target’s image as the cool place to shop came courtesy of The New York Times this week. The newspaper reported on and featured a video on its website of the retailer’s back-to-college efforts, which included chartering busses to ferry thousands of kids to its stores at 66 campuses nationwide. The program has been in place for roughly a decade, and the Times reporter who visited the campus at the University of North Carolina, where more than 2,000 freshmen participated, discovered a unique approach to currying favor with a new generation of consumers. Target opened a Missoni pop-up store in Manhattan on Sept. 8. Open for three days only for New York's Fashion Week, the pop-up store features a 25-foot tall doll in bright zigzag knits from Italian fashion house Missoni. Four puppeteers will operate the doll, called "Little Marina," moving her head and hands as she texts on her giant smartphone.
New companies are gaining ground on retail giants like Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy, according to Stores Magazines Favorite 50 Online Retailers survey. Conducted by BIGresearch, the survey found Macys, Forever 21, Aeropostale and Nordstrom each gained ground with online shoppers this year. Amazon.com, Walmart.com, eBay.com, BestBuy.com and JCPenney.com maintained the top five spots. Macys.com joined the top 10 for the first time, in part because of its new exclusive private labels. Tween and teen apparel retailers Forever21.com and Aeropostale.com both significantly improved their position from last year's ranking, performing above expectations. MINNEAPOLIS – Target Corp. reported a 3.7% increase in second-quarter net earnings to $704 million, or $1.03 per share, beating the consensus projection of 97 cents per share among analysts.
