American Apparel Cracks Down On Shoplifting

American Apparel will be tagging every neon legging, velvet bodysuit, T-shirt and iconic hoodie with a RFID sensor. The sensors will track items from the time they're shipped from American Apparel’s factory in downtown Los Angeles to when a customer purchases the item from one of its 280 stores, helping the chain to keep better track of inventory and disappearances. 

Retail Container Traffic to Show Increases in First Half of 2012

Import cargo volume at the nation's major retail container ports is expected to be down 6.8 percent in February from the same month a year ago, but should show year-over-year increases through most of the remaining first half of 2012, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

Saks to Deploy Mobile-Robotic Fulfillment System in New DC

Saks will expand its distribution and fulfillment capacity, adding a new facility in Tennessee this year. The new center will occupy approximately 564,000 square feet of leased space and will be located in LaVergne, Tenn. It will be equipped with a sophisticated mobile-robotic fulfillment system that's been successfully deployed in Saks’ Maryland facility. Saks expects the Tennessee facility to be operational by August.

Amazon Plans 2 New Jersey Warehouses

Amazon.com is in talks to open two warehouses in New Jersey in a deal that could bring 1,500 full-time jobs to a state where unemployment has hovered around 9 percent. State Assembly Democratic Leader Louis D. Greenwald said Amazon's seeking a 22-month sales tax holiday — opposed by some retailers and at least one lawmaker.

Fulfillment by Amazon Can Be Hazardous to Merchants' Bottom Line

A number of online sellers who use Fulfillment by Amazon learned about the company's ban on hazardous materials the hard way. Citing its HazMat policy, Amazon destroyed their inventory, including such items as Glade plug-ins, first aid kits, hair coloring kits, perfume, nail polish and hair spray. Certain kinds of batteries are also banned, including when they're packaged with other products.

Kohl's Opens New DC to Handle Website Fulfillment

Kohl's announced that it's entered into a purchase agreement to build a new e-commerce distribution center in DeSoto, Texas. Expected to open in summer 2012, the building will fulfill Kohls.com purchases.
