Family Dollar Deal Could Close This Month, Bring Big Changes

For Matthews, N.C.-based Family Dollar Stores, May could be one of the biggest months in the discount retailer's 56-year history. Chesapeake, Va.-based Dollar Tree has said it expects its $8.5 billion purchase of Family Dollar to close this month, capping a 10-month takeover drama. But the close has been delayed before, and neither company would comment this week. After Family Dollar shareholders approved the deal in January, the biggest remaining hurdle became regulatory approval from the Federal Trade Commission. 

RadioShack Agrees to Mediation Over Sale of Customer Data

RadioShack has agreed to mediation with state attorneys general concerned about the electronic retailer's planned sale of customer data as part of its bankruptcy reorganization. A RadioShack attorney told a Delaware bankruptcy judge Tuesday that the mediation, which will include a consumer privacy ombudsman, will start May 14. That's after a scheduled May 11 auction for intellectual property assets, including the names and addresses of millions of RadioShack customers.
