Walmart is seeking to acquire more members for its premium loyalty program, Walmart+, with a 50 percent off deal for a year. The half-off deal lasts through July 18. The timing of the offer strategically leads up to Amazon.com's Prime Day event, which is scheduled for July 16 and 17. Walmart+ subscribers gain early access to major shopping events, free shipping with no minimum purchase, same-day delivery on select items, Scan and Go shopping using the app, monetary shopping rewards, up to 10 cents per gallon off gas, and more.
Total Retail's Take: The rivalry between Amazon and Walmart continues. Many retailers, including Target, Kohl's, Best Buy, among others, have launched their own deal days to compete with Amazon Prime Day. Yet none have been as aggressive in their plans (and marketing) as Walmart has been, both this year and previous years. In addition to potentially luring away potential customers from its biggest rival, Walmart can acquire new members into its paid loyalty program. Walmart+ offers a consistent revenue stream while also fostering increased loyalty (i.e., boosting customer lifetime value) to the retailer.
