Walgreens is conducting its third round of layoffs in 2024, cutting 256 support center roles, multiple news outlets reported last week. Walgreens spokesman Fraser Engerman told Fierce Healthcare in a statement that the layoffs were part of the company's "turnaround efforts." Fox 32 Chicago reported the support center roles being cut were primarily in Chicago.
Total Retail's Take: The layoffs come less than a month after Walgreens announced it was closing 1,200 stores by 2027, including 500 locations next year. The retail pharmacy chain has reported significant losses and is focused on stabilizing its business through cost-cutting initiatives, including layoffs and reducing capital expenditures. With increased competition in the pharmacy sector, including online and the emergence of Walmart and other retailers entering the category, Walgreens is losing market share and focused on cutting costs to improve its bottom line.
