UPS Expects to Ship a Record Number of Packages This Holiday Season
United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) said yesterday it expects record deliveries this holiday season, with more than 700 million packages expected to be delivered between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve. The company expects peak holiday delivery volume to rise more than 14 percent from the same period in 2015, with two more operating days this year. UPS also said it expects a record 13 of the 21 days before Christmas to have deliveries of more than 30 million packages, compared with about 18 million package deliveries during typical nonpeak periods.
Total Retail's Take: The news that UPS is expecting a record year in terms of deliveries is good news for the entire retail industry since Big Brown has long been thought of as a barometer of the economy. When the economy is doing well, UPS is doing well, and vice versa. It's also not surprising news, given that online and mobile commerce continue to grow in popularity with consumers.
