John MacFarlane, Sonos’ CEO and co-founder, has stepped down from his position and resigned from the company’s board of directors. He will, however, remain with Sonos to work on other projects and act as a mentor to employees. Former president and chief commercial officer Patrick Spence will take over as CEO. This is the latest in a handful of personnel moves at Sonos, which began with layoffs in March of last year. Company officials said it was adjusting to the rise in streaming services, therefore forcing the layoffs.
For a while, Sonos was the only company offering multiroom audio, but that’s no longer the case. In the face of increased competition, Sonos is working on an Amazon Echo integration that will arrive later this year. Spotify Connect, which enables users to control music directly from the Spotify app, was made available back in December.
