Primark announced that it will open a new store at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills, Michigan on Sept. 12. The retailer's first store in Michigan, this opening will offer Detroit-area shoppers more than 36,600 square feet of retail selling space with the latest fashion trends and essentials for the whole family, as well as homewares and beauty. This store opening will come on the heels of Primark's opening at the Florida Mall in Orlando, due to open August 29. This momentum is part of Primark's ongoing expansion within the U.S. market; the new openings will bring Primark to 27 U.S. stores across 11 states, and more than 450 stores globally.
Total Retail's Take: The emergence of another European-based retail brand in the U.S. continues a recent trend we've seen in the industry. In particular, fashion brands, including Primark (which is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland), are investing in stores across the U.S., often starting on the coasts, with a focus on New York and Los Angeles, and then migrating into middle America. Primark, with its value-based pricing model, is seeking to win the business of budget-conscious shoppers, much like competitors such as H&M, Mango, Zara, among others.
