Macy's is growing its online presence. The Cincinnati-based retailer announced last week it will launch a website in China to expand its digital footprint in the world's largest e-commerce market. Macy's began selling in China last November when it opened a storefront on Tmall Global. Its shop has become one of the most popular on the marketplace. There are currently no plans for Macy's to open a physical storefront in China.
Total Retail's Take: This is a smart move on Macy's part. China represents a growing market for the retailer, and hopefully gains abroad will help offset domestic losses — particularly in its brick-and-mortar stores. Furthermore, Macy's has already tested the waters of e-commerce in China with its presence on Tmall, so the typical challenges of selling in a foreign land — operations, shipping, taxes, payments, etc. — should be less of a problem for the brand.
