Macy's is gearing up for the holiday season and New Year in a big way. The retailer has announced plans to expand its off-price Backstage concept. The Cincinnati Business Courier reports Macy's plans to more than double the number of Backstage locations over the next year to 45. The retailer is also switching up its offerings; in 13 of the 45 new Macy's Backstage locations, the retailer is adding new categories of merchandise, including toys and home decor.
Total Retail's Take: After a tumultuous year for Macy's, it makes sense that the retailer would be willing to try some new things. However, I'd be wary of going too heavy with the discount store approach. Just this week Kenneth Cole announced it was closing its outlet stores, and other brands, including J.Crew and Banana Republic, have struggled attracting customers to its discount stores.
