Kohl's said today that it plans to hire more than 69,000 workers this holiday season, the same number of seasonal hires as 2015, which was up about 3 percent from 2014. Positions are available across more than 1,100 stores in 49 states, as well as in distribution and fulfillment centers nationwide, and at Kohl's credit operations. Hiring began in August and most positions will be filled by mid-November, the company said.
Total Retail's Take: Kohl's isn't the first retailer to announce holiday seasonal hiring plans. Target announced it will hire more than 70,000 seasonal workers, about the same the number it hired last year. Economists watch these seasonal hiring numbers closely as they give an indication of how these retailers expect their holiday seasons to stack up. Since in Kohl's case the number is the same as last year (and an increase over 2014), indications are that a healthy — or at least standard — season is on its way.
