Even if consumers are initially tracked anonymously, cross-referencing databases like this could allow retailers to create detailed profiles of consumers that effectively strip away any pretense of anonymity. Most consumers don't trust retailers to keep the type of personally identifiable information that may be gleaned secure, particularly in light of the recent security breaches at Target and Michaels.
