It's that time of year again. No, not quite the holiday season (which will be here before we know it!). The time of year when we see which retailers will keep their stores open on Thanksgiving Day. This year, hhgregg has decided to close its stores on the holiday. The consumer electronics company announced it will be giving its employees off this Thanksgiving. The Indianapolis-based chain with 220 stores says it's important for its associates to be home with their families on Thanksgiving.
Total Retail's Take: Good! In fact, we're starting to see more retailers closing their stores on Thanksgiving (10 years ago it would have been ridiculous to even consider being open on Thanksgiving). Last year, REI actually saw an uptick in sales after closing its stores on the holiday and Black Friday. Some retailers will likely choose to stay open on Thanksgiving to get a head start on the busy shopping weekend, including Toys"R"Us, Target and other big-box retailers, however, I think we're starting to see the beginning of a return to keeping stores closed on the holiday — and employees home with their families.
