GameStop has promoted Michael Mauler to CEO, the Dallas Morning News reports. He will succeed Paul Raines, who has resigned as CEO due to a "recurring illness." Raines was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014. Mauler is a 16-year veteran of GameStop, and was most recently executive vice president and president of the retailer's 2,000-store international division. GameStop's international division operates in 13 countries and includes stores operating under the GameStop, EB Games, Micromania and Zing Pop Culture brands. Mauler has been running the division since 2010. His career at GameStop includes positions such as senior vice president of supply chain and international support.
Total Retail's Take: Mauler has been credited with playing a critical role in creating GameStop's omnichannel approach in recent years. He was in charge of expanding the business into collectibles; helping to spearhead critical acquisitions such as Simply Mac, an Apple accessories store; and more.
"We're fortunate to have a such an accomplished leader, who has a thorough understanding of our operations, business strategy and stakeholders, and is committed to strengthening our results and driving our company forward," Dan DeMatteo, executive vice chairman of GameStop said in a statement.
