Amazon.com has rolled out a new Apple TV application called “Amazon App: Browse, Search, and Shop," which enables Amazon Prime members to browse and search for products on Amazon’s site, and then buy them from the TV. Consumers using the app can can view individual products, read their descriptions, get the product details and flip through product images. The app's main screen also features collections curated by Amazon, like gift guides, which consumers can flip through for inspiration. To find something specific, users can search for items by voice, thanks to Apple TV’s Siri remote, or type in searches with the on-screen keyboard. However, purchasing items via the app is only available to Prime members.
Total Retail's Take: While the app itself is interesting, what's more interesting is that Amazon considers the Apple TV platform to be worthy of a dedicated app. Amazon Prime Video, for example, a huge growth area for the online retailer, is still not viewable on Apple TV. The tech community is predicting that app itself is probably not going to see heavy use, but we'll still watch how it develops.
