Best Buy has joined the list of retailers opening outlet stores in 2017. The Dallas Morning News reports Best Buy has opened five locations this month in Farmers Branch, Texas, near Dallas; San Antonio; Raleigh, N.C.; near Philadelphia in Newark, Del.; and outside Los Angeles in Moreno Valley, Calif. A spokesperson for the electronics brand said it will be focusing on these five core locations and will evaluate if Best Buy would like to open up more down the road. The product line will mainly be kitchen appliances. Best Buy also hopes to keep costs down by only being open on the weekends.
Total Retail's Take: Best Buy has been up and down over the last few years. I'm a little surprised by the announcement that it will be opening outlet stores following a successful Black Friday and holiday weekend turnout. While it seems like a good idea in theory, with Sears, J.C. Penney and other department stores focusing on kitchen appliances, it will be a hard market to compete in.
