Under Armour is looking to replace the void Sports Authority created when it filed for bankruptcy and announced plans to close all stores. The first of two expansion plans: taking over the iconic FAO Schwarz location in New York on Fifth Avenue. Officials say this can happen as soon as early 2018. Second, Kohl’s will begin selling Under Armour products in 600 stores in early 2017. Under Armour execs see this as an opportunity to grow the company’s women’s division and keep its high-end label reputation. Under Armour will join the likes of Nike and Adidas on Kohl’s racks.
Total Retail’s Take: Under Armour partners with major retailers like Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods, so it surprises me that its products weren't already sold at Kohl’s. This is definitely a good way to make up some of the sales lost after Sports Authority tanked. Active wear is having its moment right now. Taking over the iconic FAO Schwarz building will put Under Armour front and center in a huge shopping district.
