Editor's Note: Announcing Total Retail’s 8th Annual Top 100 Fastest-Growing Retailers List
Total Retail is excited to present its eighth annual ranking of the 100 fastest-growing publicly traded retailers. This year’s list, as in years past, is based on companies’ year-over-year net sales growth, comparing the 2017 fiscal year to the 2016 fiscal year.
For the first time in the eight years that Total Retail has complied this list, a beauty brand, Coty, took the top spot. The brand saw a 75.9 percent year-over-year sales increase, growing from $4.4 billion in FY 2016 to $7.7 billion in FY 2017. To what does Coty attribute its sales growth? According to the report, the growth is largely due to its purchase of 41 Procter & Gamble beauty brands, including Gucci fragrances, CoverGirl cosmetics and Max Factor makeup. The acquisition made Coty the world’s third-biggest cosmetics company and the largest in fragrance.
Rounding out the top 5 fastest-growing publicly traded retailers are:
- Gaiam, the seller and manufacturer of premium yoga mats, yoga props, yoga clothing and yoga accessories saw its year-over-year sales increase 64 percent, from $17.2 million in FY16 to $28.3 million in FY17
- Wayfair, the online home furnishings brand, came in third by posting a sales increase of 40 percent, from $3.4 billion to $4.7 billion between FY16 and FY17
- Floor & Décor, a multichannel specialty retailer of hard surface flooring and related accessories that was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Smyrna, Ga., took fourth with a 32 percent sales increase year-over-year, boosting revenues to $1.3 billion this year vs. $1.0 billion in FY16
- Taking fifth was Amazon.com, the online behemoth, which saw its sales increase 31 percent in FY17, growing from $136 billion in FY16 to $178 billion in FY17.
