Amazon.com is planning to add 120,000 seasonal workers this holiday season. The company created the seasonal positions in an effort to meet an expected spike in demand as more people trade in-store shopping for online. Jobs will be created at fulfillment centers, sorting centers and customer service sites in 27 states. The move marks a 20 percent boost from the 100,000 seasonal hires a year ago.
Total Retail’s Take: Amazon doesn’t want another repeat of the 2013 holiday season when capacity problems caused customers to get packages after the holidays. Online shopping is only going to grow, so Amazon is being proactive with this hiring strategy. And maybe some seasonal workers will shift to regular, full-time positions when the holidays are over.
