Amazon.com wants to take some delivery worries away from customers. The Information reported that two companies — August, which makes connected locks that you can control from your smartphone, and Garageio, a startup that builds connected garage door openers — are working on new technology that would give delivery people temporary access to your home when making a delivery. At checkout, customers would be asked if they want to give delivery staff one-time access to their homes to drop packages in a secure location.
Total Retail’s Take: Amazon is constantly upping the ante when it comes to order delivery, with same-day delivery, one-hour delivery and even delivery to the trunk of a car. It wouldn’t surprise me if Amazon moves forward with in-home delivery, too. Both August and Garageio have relationships with Amazon. August has already tested the in-home delivery service with a Seattle-based retailer (Amazon’s hometown). A wide-scale launch of this program could save Amazon a ton of money on fulfillment costs because the normal external packaging used to protect the item would be rendered obsolete. Amazon is always taking things to the next level. Maybe the delivery person can walk the dog while they stop by.
