Amazon.com will be offering select customers one-hour delivery services on its second annual Prime Day (July 12). Customers in 25 U.S. metropolitan areas will be able to get an array of 500 items delivered within 60 minutes through the Prime Now delivery service. Prime Day offers Cyber Monday-like deals to its Prime members who pay $99 annually for free, two-day shipping and other benefits.
Total Retail’s Take: Amazon is leading the way for online retailers. Offering shoppers a one-hour delivery window is sure to boost sales and put Amazon even further ahead of its competition during the upcoming back-to-school shopping period. In addition, summer months are historically lighter selling periods, so Prime Day can help boost the e-commerce giant’s sales (even without the one-hour delivery). Prime Day is also a great way to boost Prime membership. Reports show Prime customers spend twice as much with Amazon per year when compared to non-Prime customers.
