Amazon.com announced a huge expansion in Boston that will bring 2,000 technology jobs to the city, where it will focus on developing its Alexa voice-activated technology as well as cloud computing and robotics. The move cements Boston as one of the retail giant’s prime technology hubs, even as the company weighs 20 metro areas, including Boston, for the site of a second headquarters to equal its longtime home in Seattle.
Total Retail's Take: As the long, drawn out process for selecting its second headquarters continues (a decision is expected to be made this year), Amazon has made some smaller staffing investments outside of Seattle that are leading analysts to forecast the winner of the competition. At this point, Boston has to be considered one of the favorites to land Amazon's second headquarters — and the 50,000 jobs that are likely to come with it. The city and surrounding area already has three Amazon facilities, with this latest announcement raising that total to four. Amazon has added more than 3,500 jobs in Massachusetts since 2011 — are thousands more coming soon?
