Total Retail is excited to present to you its 50 Best Retail Tips of 2018! For the past several years, the Total Retail editorial team has spent time in the fourth quarter poring over the work of our expert contributors to identify the 50 very best tips of the year, and 2018 was no exception. We reviewed the content published in our e-newsletter (Total Retail Report) and website last year, and compiled 50 tips that we believe will help our audience (i.e., retail executives) be more successful. These tips cover virtually every facet of running a successful retail business, from customer experience to e-commerce to marketing to mobile to technology, and much more.
Here are three of my favorites:
- Give your employees an incentive to work on their customer service skills. Acknowledge and reward employees for going above and beyond the expectations of customers. For example, you can give a discount on their favorite items in-store or give them a reward for their hard work. You can also set up an “employee of the week” system to acknowledge excellent performance or great customer service efforts. — Lisa van Kesteren, SeeLevelHX, “How to Avoid the Post-Holiday Customer Satisfaction Dip,” Total Retail Report, Jan. 30
- By creating scarcity with stock level messages such as “only five left in stock” or urgency with “20 people are also viewing this product,” consumers will be more compelled to add the item to their cart for the fear of losing out if they don’t act quickly. — Jay Radia, Yieldify, “3 Ways to Mirror Your In-Store Experience Online,” Total Retail Report, June 29
- Enrich your loyalty emails by adding relevant data visualization to them. You can easily create infographics using free tools like Canva or Piktochart and include them in your email template. — Sreeram Sreenivasan, Ubiq, “5 Tips for Building Better Loyalty Emails in 2018,” Total Retail Report, Feb. 20
We hope you use these tips to spring your business into action. After all, they were chosen because they can help you drive top- and bottom-line gains for your organization, and are prescriptive in nature. While not all 50 may be applicable to your business — at least not yet — there’s enough here for everyone to get started.
Furthermore, these tips are meant to be shared with your colleagues. This advice extends beyond your office, and touches many parts of your organization. Educate not only yourself, but also those that surround you. Total Retail’s mission is to be the retail executive’s source for content and community. It’s through annual features such as our 50 best tips of the year that we hope to fulfill that mission.
