Marketing is crucial for many reasons, but perhaps most importantly because it helps businesses and brands create and maintain relationships with their audiences. Creating an effective marketing strategy isn't an easy solution for companies’ problems, as it requires continuous testing and brainstorming that's always evolving in order to make a positive impact on a business. This is why Total Retail featured general marketing tips in our 50 Best Retail Tips of 2019 report, a resource for brands and retailers to help them succeed in 2020.
For the annual report, the Total Retail team sorted through every piece of content the brand published in 2019 to compile what we believe are the 50 best tips of the year. Every retailer can benefit and learn from these tips to lead more successful businesses in 2020.
Here are what we decided were the best general marketing tips in 2019 that can help you with your business:
- YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat are among the top social channels for engaging Gen Z. However, the algorithms work against everyone — including retailers trying to reach young shoppers. Consider opportunities to be a “big fish in a small pond” by establishing a presence on fast-growing social platforms like Twitch, Discord, TikTok, and YouNow. You’ll reach millions, and with less algorithm resistance. — Greg Witt, Engage Youth Co., "How Retailers Can Better Engage and Sell to Gen Z Shoppers," Total Retail Report, Jan. 21
- Your marketing and advertising strategies must be adapted to fit the nuances of each platform. Don’t try to use your Google or Facebook strategy on Amazon because it won’t work. In order to best use one or more of these digital advertising systems, marketers must understand the nuances of each channel, follow what the experts are saying, and, most importantly, try to meet customers where they are at each stage of the buyer's journey. — Trevor George, Blue Wheel Media, “4 Strategies for Effectively Advertising on Google, Facebook, and Amazon," Total Retail Report, March 11
- YouTube has its own search engine optimization algorithm that ranks videos in its search engine similar to Google’s. A few simple ways to boost your YouTube SEO include correct tagging with keywords relevant to your content and brand, as well as tricks like enabling functionality for YouTube to transcribe the video in video settings. Using strong keywords, titles and hashtags, as well as making the most of the description box can help to generate more traffic. — Anna Ji, Clipchamp, "How Small Businesses Can Build and Grow Their YouTube Channel," Total Retail Report, July 26
