In the months after Patrick Campbell lost his job, the one thing that kept him from losing hope was crafting wooden crosses. He made his first for his wife, a simple one, with their nine children helping. It was her birthday and he had nothing else to give. Her tears upon seeing the gift inspired him to make more. About three years later, the crosses have provided for the South Carolina family and helped the Campbells inspire other families to endure through hardships. Campbell, his wife, Joy, and their children are among the dozens of vendors offering wares at the World Meeting of Families, a Catholic church conference drawing as many as 17,000 pilgrims to the Pennsylvania Convention Center in the days before Pope Francis visits Philadelphia this weekend.
