Samsung Electronics is opening several retail stores in Canada, hoping to compete with rivals Sony and Apple, according to the Financial Post. The stores are part of the company's larger retail strategy that includes special Samsung-branded "Experience Zones" and "store-within-a-store" kiosks inside certain electronics and partner stores featuring the company's televisions, mobile phones, tablets and appliances. Although Samsung officials are still discussing the exact locations of the first stores and which partner companies will receive the in-store Samsung zones, the first stand-alone outlets will open later this year.
Conn’s Inc. reported Tuesday that it earned $7.7 million in the quarter ended Jan. 31, compared with a loss of $3.6 million in the year-ago period. Revenue increased 3.7 percent to $226.7 million, beating Wall Street’s expected $221.4 million. Same-store sales surged 12.1 percent. The company said it's on track with its store opening plans, which calls for five stores to seven stores in new markets this year.
Verizon has officially opened its first trilingual FiOS retail store, where employees are ready to serve customers in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The store is located in Providence, R.I. “Having employees in our store who speak Spanish and Portuguese will enhance the experience for our customers," Susan Retta, vice president of marketing for Verizon, said. Reebok said Tuesday it can prove it wasn't selling merchandise in violation of its expired 10-year licensing deal with the NFL. The ban came after Nike filed a lawsuit last week, days after Tebow was traded from Denver to New York. Nike has NFL licensing rights. The Beaverton, Ore.-based company says it'll lose a one-time opportunity if the ban on Reebok sales is lifted. Reebok says it sold 6,000 Tebow Jets jerseys and 25,000 T-shirts, not enough to impact Nike sales.
West Marine said Tuesday that its President and CEO Geoff Eisenberg will resign once a new chief is appointed. Following a leadership transition period, Eisenberg will serve as a special advisor to the West Marine board of directors. West Marine has already initiated the search for a new CEO. No reason has been given for Eisenberg’s departure.
Details about H&M’s new retail concept, slated to open in 2013, are leaking out in dribs and drabs. Although the company announced last week it would open another chain when it gave its first quarter report, no name or other details were revealed. In the meantime, Dagens Nyheter, the Swedish news organization, reported that trademarks and logos for “& other stories” were registered by H&M last year. Today, H&M confirmed that “& other stories” is indeed the name of the new chain.
