Maurices Launches Branded Mobile App

Apparel retailer Maurices has debuted a new mobile application designed to enhance its customers’ in-store shopping experience. The app, introduced by AT&T and developed using Digby’s Localpoint mobile platform, allows the retailer to set virtual perimeters around its stores. Once a shopper has the app on their smartphone, and accepts the use of location information, Maurices can send them timely messages and offers via a push notification, alerting the user to noteworthy news about the specific store location as soon as they enter.

Sears Canada finalizes three-store sell-back to landlord
April 20, 2012

Toronto -- Sears Canada, Inc., an arm of Sears Holdings Corp., said Friday it has completed the transaction with landlord The Cadillac Fairview Corp. to return three stores for $170 million. The stores – located in Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa – are slated to be exited by Sears as of Oct 31, 2012. The agreement between Sears and the landlord was first announced in March.

WPP Makes Big Leap Into E-Commerce

The media and advertising giant WPP is taking a big step into e-commerce and how it can use it to leverage its other digital investments. WPP announced that it's investing $7 million into the grocery comparison shopping site mySupermarket, part of a $10 million round that also includes participation from existing investors Greylock and Pitango.

Wal-Mart announced this week the nomination of Google executive Marissa Mayer to its board of directors. Mayer, 36, joined Google in 1999 as its first female engineer and 20th employee and quickly ascended the executive ranks, first as vice president of search and now as vice president of local and maps. She also sits on Google’s operating committee, an elite group of executives that oversees every critical product launch and decision. It’s not difficult to see why Wal-Mart would want Mayer. She's a minor celebrity as a young, self-described “geek” succeeding in a male-dominated field.

Survey: Majority of shoppers prefer digital catalogs

Los Altos, Calif. -- Survey results released Thursday by catalog shopping app Catalog Spree showed that 89.8% of American shoppers would prefer to receive their catalogs digitally and would opt out of the paper versions if they could receive a digital copy instead. The survey also revealed that more than half (55.1%) of respondents would prefer all of their catalogs in digital form.
