Houston -- Ikea on Monday officially plugged-in the solar energy system installed at its store in Houston. The installation, when combined with Ikea solar projects atop stores in Frisco and Round Rock, will make the home furnishings retailer the state’s largest solar owner. Ikea contracted with REC Solar for the development, design and installation of the Houston store’s customized solar power system. The store’s 116,400-sq-.ft. photovoltaic array consists of a 813-kW system, built with 3,388 panels. Best Buy intends to cut 2,400 jobs, including 600 Geek Squad technicians, which would amount to 1.4 percent of its workforce, Reuters reported Friday. According to the report, these cuts are in addition to the job reductions related to the 50 store closings the company announced in March.
Regional sporting goods chain Hibbett Sports plans to begin construction this fall on a new distribution facility that will support more than 2,000 stores. Hibbett on Monday announced plans to build, through a wholly-owned subsidiary, a wholesaling and logistics facility in Alabaster, Alabama. Construction on the new 360,000 square-foot facility is expected to commence in fall 2012 and be fully operational by fall 2014.
