As opportunities for store growth in the U.S. have dwindled, many retailers have set their sights overseas. But the latest headlines featuring teen apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch prove that in today’s precarious environment, even that strategy is no guarantee of success. Hit hard during the recession, Abercrombie & Fitch made plans to close 15 percent of its U.S. stores and concentrate on Europe as its next expansion stage.

Daffy’s to close all 19 stores

New York -- New York City metro area retailer Daffy’s is going out of business. The discount apparel chain will close all of its 19 stores (eight of which are in Manhattan) this fall, according to various reports. The closings are not totally unexpected. Amazon.com is growing its presence in the highly competitive gaming market with the launch of Game Connect, a new service that enables customers to discover a new category of free-to-play and multiplayer online digital games and have virtual goods delivered directly to their game accounts. Amazon's new service allows customers to link their game account to their Amazon account so any subscriptions and virtual goods purchased are sent directly into the game without copy and pasting a code. 

CBRE: Hong Kong and New York are world’s most expensive retail destinations

London -- Hong Kong is the world’s most expensive retail destination, with retail rents at $3,864 per square foot, according to the quarterly rankings of global retail rents from global property advisor CBRE Group. CBRE cited the city’s significant inbound tourist traffic and continued increases in domestic wealth as fueling demand from international fashion and luxury retailers. The CBRE rankings saw little change in the first quarter of 2012 compared with the previous quarter. New York retained the number two position, at $2,475 per square foot. Both New York and Hong Kong experienced significant increases in retail rents quarter-over-quarter.

Rumor Mill: Amazon Exploring Same-Day Delivery

The Financial Times reported last week that the reason Amazon is setting up scores of distribution centers across the U.S. is so it can soon start making same-day deliveries. Amazon hasn't discussed same-store delivery and told the San Francisco Chronicle it doesn't comment on "rumors and speculation." The possible move would amount to a major shift for the online giant that has long sought to plant its massive distribution centers in tax-friendly states to avoid paying sales tax.
