Tractor Supply Q2 profit, sales rise

Brentwood, Tenn. -- Farm and ranch store chain Tractor Supply Co. reported Wednesday that net income for the second quarter rose 17% to $106.6 million, compared with $91.2 million in the same period last year. Sales increased 9.6% to $1.29 billion, just missing Wall Streetโ€™s expected $1.30 billion in sales.

Canadian retailer to close 64 Zellers stores

TORONTO - Canadian retailer Hudson's Bay Co. says it will close most of its 64 remaining Zellers Inc. stores that aren't being converted to Target stores, affecting up to 6,400 jobs. A spokeswoman for Hudson's Bay Co. said Thursday that the Zellers parent company has been contemplating what to do with the brand since last year, when it sold the majority of the leases for the discount stores to Target Corp. GNC profit near doubles in Q2

Pittsburgh -- GNC Holdings reported Thursday that net income for the quarter ended June 30 nearly doubled to $66.7 million, compared with $36 million for second quarter 2011. Consolidated revenue increased 19.4% to $619.1 million, and same-store sales increased 12.9% in domestic company-owned stores, representing the company's 28th consecutive quarter of positive same store sales growth.

Wal-Mart Sued by Disabled Over Hard-to-Reach Payment Machines

A federal lawsuit against Wal-Mart was filed on Wednesday by disability rights advocates claiming that payment machines are inaccessible to California customers in wheelchairs and on scooters. Although the group admits that most retailers place point-of-sale terminals out of reach of disabled customers, it readily admits it's targeting Wal-Mart because โ€œthey are the biggest retailer in the world โ€ฆ They should be able to do it right,โ€ said Arlene Mayerson, directing attorney at the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund.

2012 Holiday Shopping Season to Be โ€˜The Year of Mobileโ€™

IBMโ€™s fifth annual Online Retail Holiday Readiness Report has uncovered that 2012 may just be the year of mobile. Based on data from more than 500 U.S. retailers, the report found that online mobile sales increased 88.8 percent in the second quarter of 2012 compared with the same quarter in the prior year. IBM is forecasting that mobile sales will reach 20 percent of total online holiday sales this upcoming season, and that mobile traffic will close in on 25 percent. However, despite the growing trend in mobile shopping, social is lagging, according to IBM.
