eBay is gearing up for the back-to-school shopping season with several marketing and affiliate initiatives, including Pinterest contests, a Facebook backpack drive and a promotion for its affiliates. The marketing is designed to increase user engagement with eBay on social media websites, encourage sellers to list back-to-school items and to reward affiliates for driving traffic to back-to-school listings. eBay is holding a Pinterest sweepstakes where one grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 eBay shopping spree toward a dorm room makeover. Students must follow eBay on Pinterest and create a new Pinterest pin board called "My eBay Dorm Room."
Some sellers who were impacted by a glitch on Amazon.com earlier this month say they've been unable as of yet to recoup losses stemming from the incident and say their Amazon performance metrics suffered as a result. In mid-July, EcommerceBytes wrote about the glitch in Appeagle's repricing software that caused some sellers’ listings to be inadvertently sold for 1 cent. Appeagle Spokesperson Zee Mehler said that initially Amazon told it that it would cancel the merchants’ orders that were placed through the Fulfillment by Amazon system.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — O'Reilly Auto Parts, reported that sales for its second quarter ended June 30 increased $84 million, or 6%, to $1.56 billion from $1.48 billion for the same period one year ago. The company posted a 9% increase in net income to $146 million from $134 million for the same period last year. Diluted earnings per common share for the second quarter increased 20% to $1.15 on 127 million shares versus 96 cents for the same period one year ago on 140 million shares. New York -- Seven Walmart stores in Missouri were evacuated after receiving bomb threats but no explosives were found and no injuries were reported, according to Reuters. The threats were called in late on Friday to stores in Raytown, Gladstone, Jefferson City, Nixa, St. Peters and Ozark, the report said.
New York -- Richard Schulze, the founder of Best Buy, is recruiting a team of managers to run the company should his attempt to take the company private be successful, according to a report by Bloomberg. “He is talking to people he trusts. There is a small group he’d like to have with him in righting the ship,” J.D. Wilson, senior VP of enterprise capabilities, said in an interview with Bloomberg. Wilson said his position is being eliminated as part of Best Buy’s planned cutbacks. Schulze, 71, currently holds a 20% stake in Best Buy.

U.S. authorities are considering launching a wide-ranging examination of the retail industry for violations of an anti-foreign bribery law after Wal-Mart and other retailers have come forth with their own potential offenses, people familiar with the matter said. Retailers have been reviewing their international operations in light of a bribery scandal at Wal-Mart's operations in Mexico that's the subject of investigations by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
