Retail Industry is Freaking Out Over Threat of Amazon Stores

Amazon.com Founder Jeff Bezos took home the National Retail Federation's prestigious Gold Medal Award yesterday, marking the first time an online retailer has received the award. Amazon has probably been the single most disruptive force in retail in the past years, and is therefore not exactly beloved by the traditional brick-and-mortar industry. So as NRF's membership base is comprised mainly of brick-and-mortar retailers, acknowledgement from the organization is a bit of a big deal for e-commerce.

Wal-Mart to Hire Vets, Buy More American Products

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer and the biggest private employer in the U.S. with 1.4 million workers here, said Tuesday that it's rolling out a three-part plan to help jump-start the sluggish U.S. economy. The plan includes hiring more than 100,000 veterans in the next five years, spending $50 billion to buy more American-made merchandise in the next 10 years and helping its part-time workers move into full-time positions.

RadioShack, Target Dissolve Partnership

RadioShack will end its partnership with Target, effective April 8. Through the partnership, RadioShack helped operate Target Mobile in 1,500 Target stores, with access to manage the retailer's post-paid mobility business. RadioShack, however, didn't manage the prepaid mobility business or the wider range of accessories offered in Target stores. Since October 2012, the retailer had been renegotiating the terms of the relationship with Target to establish an agreement that would be profitable to both companies.

NRF: Holiday Retail Sales Increase

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), December retail sales (excluding automobiles, gas stations and restaurants) increased 0.8 percent seasonally adjusted from November, and 2.1 percent unadjusted year-over-year. Total holiday retail sales increased 3 percent, below NRF's projected forecast of 4.1 percent, to $579.8 billion. Additionally, nonstore holiday sales grew 11.1 percent. In October, Shop.org forecasted a 12 percent growth in online sales in November and December.
