J.C. Penney's Bad Vibes Lead to a Death Watch

Never have I seen so much bad news about a company I really like. I think Ron Johnson, president and CEO of J.C. Penney, is a capable strategist. His idea to streamline the company and reduce sales is admirable. While his instincts may have been right, his guidance of the operation has been flawed. For starters, he never tested his merchandise pricing concept prior to putting it into action. Now the news is getting very bad, which will only make matters worse for the future of the company. Bad news begets bad news. Here are some recent observations:

hhgregg to Match Prices of Online Retailers

hhgregg announced that it's launched a "Price Match Guarantee" to ensure that its customers receive the lowest advertised prices on merchandise both in-store and online, for up to 30 days after the date of purchase. Under the new program, hhgregg will match competitors' lowest advertised prices on in-stock merchandise of the same make and model, up to 30 days after a purchase. The guarantee applies to local brick-and-mortar competitors as well as a list of major online retailers. Customers do not need to bring sales flyers to the store, as sales associates can verify competitive pricing.

Amazon to Launch Virtual Currency

Amazon.com plans to put tens of millions of dollars into the hands of its customers this spring. Instead of cash, the money will be in the form of Amazon Coins, a virtual currency recently announced by the online retailer. The new scrip will be made available to Amazon customers for use with the company's entertainment tablet, Kindle Fire. Shoppers can spend Amazon Coins in the Amazon Appstore on games and apps. At launch, only U.S. customers will be able to buy and spend Amazon Coins.
