Online retail giant Amazon.com was asked to make a "substantial donation" to a woman's refuge on Saturday night after its U.K. website offered T-shirts for sale promoting rape and violence against women. The T-shirts, which were also manufactured and sold in the U.S., included slogans that were spun off the phrase, "Keep Calm and Carry On," a famous British propaganda slogan and included shirts that read: "Keep Calm and Hit Her," "Keep Calm and Rape a Lot" and "Keep Calm and Rape Them" for $23 to $26.

Macyโ€™s May Seek Expansion of Sales Ban of Martha Stewart Goods

Macy's may ask a judge later this week to expand a preliminary ban against Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia that would prevent J.C. Penney from selling Stewart-designed goods in certain exclusive categories even if they aren't marked with her name. Justice Jeffrey K. Oing, presiding over a nonjury trial in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan, said he will hear lawyersโ€™ arguments on the issue on March 8, when a trial over the sales agreement had been scheduled to end. Oing and lawyers for the two sides discussed the possibility that the trial may go past that date.

Poor Mobile App Performance Could Stifle Retail Sales

These two multichannel retailers have found that mobile store locators get feet in stores and dollars in the cash register. RadioShack launched its mobile site in 2011, streamlining it to make it easier for shoppers to quickly find products and services. It includes a mobile, touch-optimized store locator with click-to-call and GPS functionality. After its launch, the retailer found its average order value increased by 30 percent.

The SAKSFIRST loyalty card that previously had a $1,000 threshold for customer participation in the program is now available to anybody and the benefits start with the first purchase. That's great news. The expanding program will reward customers with gift cards that start at a 2 percent level and rise to 6 percent for more substantial purchases. All participants in the loyalty program will receive additional benefits such as free shipping and invitations to special fashion shows.
