Restoration Hardware Catalog Lands With a Thud

The Spring 2013 Restoration Hardware catalog has arrived and this is notable for just a few reasons. It's not one catalog, it's six. And it appears Restoration Hardware is rebranding itself RH, or so each catalog is labeled. At a total of 1,598 pages, the six books cover: Small Spaces; Objects of Curiosity; Tableware; Baby & Child; Outdoor & Garden; and Interiors.

These are the conclusions we reached following  a recent survey conducted earlier this year to learn customers' attitudes about the kind of service they receive. Last month I pointed out that 42 percent of customers told us that they would rather stand in line at the DMV than contact customer service. The growing popularity of Amazon.com's membership program, Amazon Prime, has sent shockwaves among rival retailers since debuting a few years ago. For $79 a year, Prime members receive unlimited two-day free shipping on eligible Amazon purchases (with no minimum order size), as well as access to Amazon's video-on-demand service, Amazon Instant. The rate of adoption of Amazon Prime, coupled with the growing reach of Amazon, has caused rivals to scramble to offer alternative programs and initiatives to stay competitive, fearing that Prime dramatically lowers members' shopping activity on non-Amazon websites.

J.C. Penney's Cleanup Includes Unpaid Contractors

Myron Ullman has another item on his to-do list as he tries to revive J.C. Penney: dealing with litigation alleging the department store chain didn't pay for store upgrades ordered by predecessor Ron Johnson. EMJ Corp., a general contractor based in Chattanooga, Tenn., has filed liens totaling $2.3 million and lawsuits against the retailer in three states, saying it refused to pay for work completed in September. R&R Packaging Inc. of Gravette, Ark., has a pending action claiming it's owed $4 million for installing wireless internet networks in J.C. Penney stores across the country last year.
