Retail Sales Rise Slightly, Lifting Hope for Rebound

After dropping in March, retail sales unexpectedly eked out a 0.1 percent gain in April, pointing to underlying strength in the economy and leading forecasters to raise estimates of second-quarter growth. The gain in retail sales, which account for about 30 percent of consumer spending, was the latest sign of resilience in an economy that has been hit by belt-tightening in Washington as the government tries to cut the budget deficit.

Amazon Unit Rolls Out Prime-Like Service

Amazon.com's Quidsi subsidiary is jumping on the Prime bandwagon. The unit, which Amazon bought for about $500 million in 2010 and which operates Diapers.com and Soap.com, is offering its own version of the popular Prime shipping service that will allow users to get two-day shipping on many orders. For now, it's offering the service free to users for 90 days, though it will later introduce a paid annual membership.
