Neiman Marcus Files for IPO; Looks to Expand Outlet Center Format

Luxury department store operator Neiman Marcus on Monday disclosed plans for a proposed public offering of up to $100 million. The retailer's plan, announced in a regulatory filing, comes some eight years after it was acquired for $5.1 billion by private equity firms TPG Capital and Warburg Pincus. In its filing, Neiman Marcus indicated a desire to expand its outlet center concept, Last Call, which currently operates 35 locations.

I don't often get invited to meet with politicians about pending legislation, but next week I will have the opportunity to sit down with Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro to discuss the Marketplace Fairness Act. In preparation for the meeting, I asked Terri Alpert, an active opponent of the bill, to educate me about what's at stake for small businesses. Alpert is a well-respected CEO who has built two top-shelf brands (Uno Alla Volta and Artisan Table) that do over $14 million in sales, and employ more than 50 people year-round. If this bill has her spooked, I need to know why.

Chico's Reveals Value of RFID-Enabled Inventory Accuracy

The item-level inventory accuracy enabled by RFID tagging will be a critical element for Chico's as it seeks to maximize sales opportunities from buy online/pick up in-store occasions. The confidence of knowing which items are actually available in each store will allow the retailer to arm store associates with customer-specific purchase history data, enabling highly effective cross-selling and upselling when the shopper comes into the store. Chico's Director of Store Technology Ken Silay and COO Kent Kleeberger laid out the technology and process pyramid that will be needed to fully enable this cross-channel appointment shopping.
