Ross Stores reports record earnings growth

Ross Stores reported Thursday that net income for the quarter ended July 31 rose 25% to a record $129.3 million, compared with net income of $103.4 million in the year-earlier period. Sales increased 8% to $1.912 billion, with same-store sales up 4% on top of a 3% gain in the prior year.Michael Balmuth, vice chairman and CEO, commented, "Our ability to deliver compelling bargains, while operating our business on much lower inventories, remains the primary driver of our strong results. Gap Reports Quarterly Profit; Unveils New Buyback

SAN FRANCISCO -- Gap Inc. said late Thursday that quarterly net income came in at $234 million, or 36 cents a share. That compares to net income of $228 million, or 33 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Net sales climbed 2% to $3.32 billion in the period. SAN FRANCISCO -- Zumiez Inc. late Thursday said that it swung to a slight profit in the second quarter, reporting net income of $114,000, up from a loss of $3.1 million last year. Casual Male Retail Group reported Thursday that net income jumped 54% in the quarter ended July 31 to $5.6 million, from $3.6 million a year ago. Revenue fell 1% to $97.3 million, from $98.3 million. Children's Place loss widens in Q2, but sales rise 9%

Children's Place Retail Stores reported Thursday that its second-quarter loss widened to $8.2 million in the quarter ended July 31, compared with a loss of $7 million a year earlier. Sales climbed to $345.3 million from $315.7 million; however, higher expenses cut into the 9% sales increase. Same-store sales rose 3.3% in the United States and just less than 1% in Canada. Online same-store sales jumped 30%.The retailer boosted its full-year earnings guidance which now matches Wall Street expectations.
