Wal-Mart unveils early holiday toy discount

Wal-Mart did not say how many toys it is discounting, but Laura Phillips, senior vice president of toys and seasonal merchandising, said in a statement the company conducted focus groups throughout the year to ensure that the company has the right toys in stock and offered at discounts. The early, aggressive discounts are an opening gambit in what's expected to be a positive selling season for toys. Spending on toys is expected to rise 2 percent this year after declining 1 percent to $21.47 billion last year, according to The NPD Group, which does market research.

Syms loss widens in Q2 with impact of Fileneโ€™s acquisition

Syms Corp. reported late Thursday that it lost $10.9 million in the quarter ended Aug. 28, compared with a loss of $7.9 million in the year-ago period. The widened loss is mostly attributable to one-time charges related to Symsโ€™ acquisition of Fileneโ€™s Basement in second quarter 2009, according to the company. Revenues for the quarter surged 34% to $102.1 million, from $76.4 million in the prior-year quarter, reflecting the impact of Filene's Basement.Same-store sales increased 16% for the quarter.

Ritz Camera, whose CEO vowed to embrace the digital age after rescuing the company from extinction last year, is making it easy for iPhone users to actually print all those pictures they take. A new function in its second-generation iPhone app, called RitzPix, allows users to upload photos and pick up the prints at the nearest Ritz Camera store in an hour.
