) CVS Caremark Corp. reported Wednesday that net income for the quarter ended Sept. 30 fell a sharp 20% to $809 million, compared with net income of $1.02 billion in the year-ago period. The retailer attributed the profit contraction to canceled contracts within its pharmacy benefit unit. Revenue dropped 3.1% to $23.88 billion, compared with $24.6 billion in the prior year. Front store same-store sales increased 1.4% in the period. Coraopolis, Pa.-based Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. has outlined a national expansion campaign that includes new stores in Oregon, Washington and Maryland. According to the Portland Business Journal, the sporting goods retailer plans to expand to 11 stores in Oregon—it currently operates eight stores in the state. In addition, Dick’s plans to open 14 new stores in Maryland, according to the Baltimore Business Journal. Eventually, Dick's hopes to more than double its network of sporting goods stores nationally, from 425 to 900, as unveiled in a document filed Oct. 22, with the Securities and Exchange Commission. ) Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. reported Tuesday that net income for the quarter ended Oct. 3 decreased to $6.8 million, compared with net income of $8 million in the year-ago period. Revenue edged up to $231.8 million, compared with $231.6 million a year earlier. Same-store sales increased 2%. The sporting goods retailer opened three new stores during the quarter, bringing its total store count to 391 stores.
RadioShack Corp. reported net income of $46 million, or 37 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $1.05 billion for the period ending Sept. 30. The new location will be City Sports’ fourth District-area location and 18th store in the Northeast. ) The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on Wednesday sent a letter to 14 CEOs of major retail companies urging them to take precautions to prevent worker injuries during Black Friday and the holiday season's other major sales events. The letter was accompanied by a fact sheet outlining injury-reducing tips. "Crowd-related injuries during special retail sales and promotional events have increased during recent years," said Assistant Secretary for OSHA Dr. David Michaels.
