TEL AVIV -- Big Lots Inc., the Columbus, Ohio, closeout retailer, reported that for the third quarter ended Oct. 30, same-store sales -- those open for at least two years at the beginning of the fiscal year -- rose 0.7%. Total sales rose 2.4% to $1.04 billion. Sales were solid in the first half of the quarter and turned volatile and inconsistent in late September through October, Chief Executive Steve Fishman said in a Thursday statement. He said he was encouraged by sales of seasonal items and holiday toys, which are key to the company's fourth-quarter holiday plans.
Limited Brands (NYSE:LTD) soared to a 48-month high Thursday after reporting strong third-quarter sales and significantly improving its earnings guidance. Third-quarter revenue for the provider of women’s intimate apparel, beauty and personal care products, operating under names such as Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, was $1.98 billion, up from $1.78 billion a year ago, with comparable store sales gaining 10%. ) Footwear retailer DSW reported Wednesday that net sales for the third quarter ended Oct. 30 increased to $489.3 million, compared with $444.6 million in the year-ago period. Same-store sales surged 10.1%. DSW operates 313 stores in 39 states, operates e-commerce site dsw.com, and supplies footwear to 351 leased locations in the United States.
Cabela’s reported Tuesday that net income for the third quarter increased 5 percent to $19.7 million, compared with net income of $18.8 million in the year-ago period. Total revenue rose 3.9 percent to $643 million. Retail store revenue increased 6 percent to $369 million, while direct revenue decreased 1.1 percent to $219 million. Same-store sales for the period increased 2.4 percent.
