Rue21 Q3 profit rises 22%

Warrendale, Pa. -- Rue21 Inc. reported Wednesday that its third-quarter profit surged 22% to $8.7 million, from $7.1 million a year earlier, as the apparel retailer opened dozens of new stores during the period. Revenue climbed 19% to $194.8 million, but missed Wall Streetโ€™s expected $197.3 million in revenue. The company opened 30 stores during the quarter and expanded eight into its "Rue21 etc!" format.

Syringes found in clothing at Ga. Walmart store

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- A Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokeswoman says the retailer will pay for any valid medical expenses for customers harmed as a result of syringes found in clothing at one of its north Georgia stores. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Dianna Gee tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/sVXJQ2) that company officials believe the syringe scare is isolated to its Cartersville store. November Same-Store Sales Slow

Retail same-store sales slowed to 3.3 percent growth in November, according to Kantar Retail. The results were challenged by relatively strong 2010 numbers and weaker performance outside of Black Friday. The sales-weighted composite was weaker than the 3.9 percent same-store sales gain last month and the 5.6 percent gain in November 2010. Tandy Leather factory posted the biggest increase in same-store sales at 13 percent, followed by Saks at 9.3 percent and Costco at 9 percent. Penney: Later Opening Cost Black Friday Sales

J.C. Penney is blaming its decision to open later than some competitors on Black Friday as a factor in the chain's same-store sales decline in November. According to a statement by the company, its same-store numbers were tracking ahead of the prior year leading up to the holiday weekend. But "its decision to respect Thanksgiving Day for families and open at 4 a.m. on Friday, as it had in prior years, adversely impacted Black Friday sales.
