When William Henry Belk launched a department store in Monroe, N.C. in 1888, he named it the New York Racket. The name, he believed, made the store sound bigger than it actually was. The new branding, the companyโs first change since 1967, was just one element in a massive multiyear remake of the department store chain.
Wal-Mart is investigating potential corruption in its overseas practices, the company said. In a quarterly report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Wal-Mart said it began an internal investigation โinto whether certain matters, including permitting, licensing and inspections, were in compliance with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act,โ and that it had already taken unspecified remedial measures in relation to the investigation. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act prohibits bribery and enforces accounting standards for U.S. companies doing international business.
Lowe's has found itself facing a backlash after the retail giant pulled ads from a reality show about American Muslims. Lowe's stopped advertising on TLC's "All-American Muslim" after the Florida Family Association complained, saying the program was "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."
West Chester, Pa. -- QVC announced Monday that Beth Rubino has been promoted to executive VP human resources and workplace services, reporting to QVC president and CEO Mike George. Rubino was previously senior VP human resources and workplace services. New York City -- Macyโs said Monday it has brought back its โ24-hourโ stores for three all-nighters beginning Dec. 21.
