Employee Theft Costs Retailers More Than Shoplifting, Organized Crime

Retailers nationwide lose less to shoplifters and organized crime than they do to another group: their own employees. Thefts by employees accounted for about 45 percent of retail losses in 2010, according to the National Retail Security Survey. Shoplifting and organized retail crime made up about 31 percent of inventory shrinkage, the accounting term for loss of products between the point of purchase from a supplier and point of sale.

eBay Boosts Mobile Offerings With New Partnerships

eBay has announced a number of strategic moves including a new partnership with major carrier Three.co.uk; integrations with merchants such as Yotel and Entradas.com; and mobile app updates that evolve mobile commerce selling and shopping experiences for consumers. In 2011, eBay mobile commerce generated $5 billion in retail volume, and PayPal mobile generated $4 billion in payment volume. eBayโ€™s mobile apps have been downloaded more than 70 million times, according to the company.

Online Retail Spending at $200 Billion Annually and Growing

Americans spent more than $200 billion on online shopping in 2011 and are expected to shell out $327 billion on internet stores by 2016. That's the estimate from a report released by Forrester Research Analyst Sucharita Mulpuru, who also predicts that online sales will make up almost 9 percent of overall retail sales by 2016, up from 7 percent.

Amazon, Bookstore Group Settle Suit Over Advertising Claims

Amazon.com and a trade group for college bookstores settled a lawsuit over Amazon's advertising for textbook discounts, the group said. Amazon was advertising discounts of 30 percent on new college textbooks and 90 percent on used ones. In May, Amazon asked a federal court in Seattle to declare that its advertising wasn't false or misleading.
